Mindfulness 1 Day Taster - Come and experience a taste of mindfulness for yourself!

Thursday 15th January 2009, 9.00am-4.30pm
Conference Room, Hen Goleg, Bangor University

The Taster Day is
• A chance for you to see if mindfulness feels relevant to your life
• An opportunity to experience a range of mindfulness practices (as taught on our 8-week Mindfulness Course)

There will also be a brief introduction to the theoretical basis for mindfulness-based approaches.

Funding is available for a limited number of University staff.

What will the day involve?

We will be experiencing a range of ways that we can learn to "show up" more fully in our lives. We will explore bringing awareness to everyday activities such as eating and walking. We will also be guiding you in mindfulness practices which will involve gentle movements, sitting, and lying down.

As we do these practices we will explore how we can focus our awareness on aspects of our experience in a kindly and curious way. We will then reflect on the learning which arises from the practices and the relevance this has to our everyday life.

The Evidence for Mindfulness-Based Approaches

Research suggests that mindfulness practice can have a range of impacts on our bodies and minds. It has been shown, for example, to reduce stress levels, help people manage chronic pain, reduce the recurrence of depression and improve the speed that skin heals for people with psoriasis.

Mindfulness is an approach to life based on the understanding that
'the present is the only time that any of us have to be alive - to know anything - to perceive - to learn - to act - to change- to heal'
(Kabat-Zinn, 1990)

Our 8-week Mindfulness Course starts in February / March and is also available as a Distance Learning Course.

The course can help you:

• Deal more effectively with stress and worries
• Restore balance, control and peace of mind
• Face illness and pain with greater confidence
• Relax more easily, gain more enjoyment in life
